Initially, before completing the simulation on the understanding of collective bargaining, I thought that labor unions are only concerned with raising the working individuals wages and supporting their prosperous and fair economy. I thought that labor unions were only concerned with raising the workers wages and strengthening their rights in the workplace. After joining the course, I have known that labor unions have a democratic structure as they hold elections to choose officers responsible for making decisions beneficial to members. The course has enabled me to learn that employees pay dues to the unions whereby the labor unions act as employees’ advocates. Through the course, I have understood that labor unions are often industry-specific and appear to be most common today in the public sector.Also, before joining the course I thought that employees form labor unions without obtaining a charter from the national labor organization level. However, the course has enabled me to understand that thee exist two organizations that oversee labor unions in the united states which include the American Federation of labor and the change to win federation. The organizations ensure that labor unions through collective bargaining in the United States protect workers’ common interests. The organization also ensures that labor unions fight for better wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable hours for employees in the industrial sector. Again, I think that collective bargaining ensures the workforce does not include underage employees, they provide health benefits and offer aid to employees who are retired or injured. I have also known that business unionism seeks to win labor’s fair share of the profits through collective bargaining as the employers are afraid of employee striking.My School of thought regarding labor unions that I believe in is Human Resources Management. This is because within unionized workplaces the union leadership role is considered to be as significant as that of management. Labor unions can influence the attitude of the workers towards the workplace and their responsibilities and duties. Therefore, I think that labor unions play an important role in developing a positive attitude in the workplace as they motivate employees to work within the organization’s interest meaning that their influence can be effective just like in the opposite direction. Also, my school of thought in the labor unions resonates in the human resource management because behavioral and attitudinal reactions to the human resource management innovation are influenced by the guidance they receive from their labor union leaders which means they can influence the leading functions of the human resource management.Furthermore, because the primary aim of the union is to increase the employees well-being, the unionized firms invite completion among the employees by internally opening the job vacancy. Having labor unions implies that there is a more likelihood that the organization would post jobs internally for the open competition among the existing employees. Also, I think that unions are largely established to ensure that the management makes an impact on the employees wages, better working equipment, better working conditions, and prerequisites at the devolutions expense to productivity and work. Also, the labor unions ensure that management works towards better facilities for employees working in unionized organizations than those working in non-unionized organizations. Therefore, I think that my school of thought resonates around human resource management because collective bargaining induces better management and thus higher productivity. Also, unions that increase retention and development of the skills, offer information occurring on the shop floors, increase morale and pressure the organizations management to be effective in its operations.
